'Regional Selection' Nelson Montepulciano 2021

Kahurangi Estate Regional Series aims to capture the essence of several well know NZ wine-growing regions. Montepulciano is not commonly grown in New Zealand but has found a home in the heart of Upper Moutere with small plantings of this Central Italian classic.

Intensely deep purple in colour, the nose shows subtle characters of savoury dark cherries. A medium-bodied dry wine, it exhibits soft tannins with juicy dark berry flavours and soft notes of dried tobacco and thyme.

Offering lovely fruit purity and perfume, the wine shows Black Doris plum, sweet cherry, olive and toasted almond characters, followed by a fruity palate that's finely textured and persistent. Elegantly framed by fine tannins, it's immediately approachable and enjoyable.

A very promising wine with a youthful, lifted fruit centric bouquet driven by scents of dark cherry and preserved plum, there’s a layer of darker spice with clove and vanilla then rosewood. On the palate - dry, taut, palate squeezing acid line with flavours of ripe and tart cherry, moderate tannins and a moment of citrus peel. A wine very much in its youth needing time to cellar and develop. Best drinking from 2024 through 2030 or before then with high protein food.
