Nelson Wine

Nelson’s long sunshine hours and three distinct microclimates set the scene for consistently excellent wine.

However, the unique characteristics of wines from this region also owe a debt to our artisan communities. With the perfect climate and a long tradition of valuing authentic craftsmanship, it is no wonder that Nelson wines are poised to take their place on the international stage.

Waimea Plains

With Marlborough just down the road and over the hill, it comes as no surprise that Nelson produces outstanding Sauvignon Blanc.

The Waimea plains are the perfect home to this variety, with hot days and cool nights and protected from extreme temperatures by surrounding mountains. The stony alluvial soils of the plains provide the basis for complex wines with hints of ripe fruit.

Moutere Hills

The famous clay soils of the Moutere Hills bring exciting dimensions to wine from this area. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay develop rich textures in these unique soils and Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Gris take on intriguing new characteristics, setting them apart from the crowd.

Established in 1973, the Riesling vines in this area are some of the oldest in New Zealand, bringing depth of flavour to the fruit and delightful complexity in each new vintage.

Kina Peninsula

With the spectacular Ruby Bay on one side and the Motueka inlet on the other, The Kina Peninsula vineyards enjoy all the benefits of a maritime influence. The vines of this area have their feet in Moutere clays, but are protected from frost by refreshing sea breezes.

In this sunny ‘Tuscan’ microclimate, a small number of dedicated growers produce high-quality grapes. Here, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc vines are hand-tended with love, adding a unique contribution to the characterful story of Nelson wines.
