2021 Harvest was another high quality but tough vintage for the Nelson region. Starting with a cool spring and late, dry summer volumes were down overall by 35%. On the upside, the quality of fruit is superb, perfect for making sensational wine. Subtle cream and ripe stone-fruit notes on the nose with a full and generous palate showing soft vanilla, peach and dried apricot flavours and considerate integration of 10 months in new and near new oak. Complex, fresh and varietal with a mix of new and aged French barrel, flavours on the palate of nectarine and peaches, some caramelised red apple and fresh fig. Barrel flavours of vanilla and white smoke, some accompanying tannins and medium+ acidity build a sound foundation. Weighty, almost full-bodied, mineral with some oyster shell and clay combinations and core fruit flavours. Balanced, well made and long, a lovely wine with best drinking from 2022 through 2029.
