Background
Kahurangi Estate is a New Zealand family owned boutique vineyard specialising in hand-made wines. The vineyard was first established in the early 1970’s and has some of the oldest commercial vines in the South Island. The Day family purchsed the vineyard in 1998 and changed the name to Kahurangi Estate.
Kahurangi Estate is now a category 2 winery with a current production of 600 tonnes. We are the 3rd largest winery in the Nelson Region and one of the fastest growing small wineries in New Zealand
Location
The Vineyard and Winery is situated in the village of Upper Moutere, 33 kms from the city of Nelson. The Nelson Wine Region lies in the North-West corner of the South Island of New Zealand.
The Region includes three National Parks, the largest being Kahurangi, known for its great natural beauty, fine trout fishing and world renowned Heaphy Track.

The Logo

The logo is a stylalised reproduction of the Nikau palm, which proliferates in the valleys, beaches and dense undergrowth found in Kahurangi National Park. The Nikau Palm signifies the enduring qualities of the vineyard and the region.
Climate
Nelson benefits from a sunny, maritime climate and as a region claims the highest sunshine hours int he country. Our climate allows us to specialise in aromatic grape varieties that respond to “cool climate” conditions. Our grape varieties consist of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.Sustainable
Kahurangi Estate is currently a fully Sustainable Vineyard and we are in the process of applying for our Winery to become Sustainable. This is assurance to our customers that we are dedicated to the reputation of the New Zealand Wine Industry to produce premium quality wines with true environmental integrity.
Property
The property has roads to three sides and is triangular in shape. It consists of 30 acres (12.14 hectares) of land and is boarded by Sunrise Rd, Sunrise Valley Rd and Moutere Highway.
On the remaining four acres are the owners house, a 1400 sq. metre winery complex with a licensed sales and café area, large office and boardroom, laboratory and a separate 240sq metre workshop and covered storage area.
Five Oaks Vineyard
As well as producing grapes from its own vineyard Kahurangi also leases a further 30 acre vineyard, which it also manages. The vineyard is located 1km from Kauharangi Estate, on the northern side of the village of Upper Moutere. Plantings consist of Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. There is also a small planting of Montepulciano on the property. Five Oaks came into full production in 2006.
Grape Supply
With up to 200 tonnes of grapes secured annually from its home block and Five Oaks vineyard, Kahurangi Estate also buys in grapes from selected Nelson growers. Kahurangi has in place a range of contracts to ensure premium supply of grapes from a range of soil types and micro climates.
Winery
The Winery is a modern facility with the majority of tanks and processing equipment purchased new over the last few years. Much of the equipment is "state of the art" and assists in achieving the high quality expected from the Kahurangi Brand.
Current capacity allows production of up to 30,000 cases per vintage. It is expected by 2007 the winery will have increased capacity to make 40,000 cases.
Cottage
There is a cottage at the front of the property, which has been completely refurbished and is rented out as a luxury "Vineyard Stay". There are also 25 Olive Trees planted around the Vineyard Cottage with 50 more planted on the Vineyard, producing our own oil and olives for the Cafe.
